Day 1 – Arrive San Jose
Welcome to Costa Rica! Upon arrival at
the international airport, you will be met by a professional guide and
driver. Transfer to the hotel, welcome briefing and overnight.
Day 2 – San Jose – Puerto Viejo (B, D)
After breakfast, we transfer to the
Caribbean coast of the country where the group will be volunteering with
The Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary which is primarily comprised of an
educational learning center offering tours to the public and a rescue
center with Slothpital (medical facilities) and homes for over a hundred
sloths who are recovering from illness, injury or who cannot survive
independently in the wild. Because the primary focus of the Center is
the welfare of the animals in care, most of the sloths are not on
display to the public. However, our tour does offer close observational
contact and photo opportunities with several of our special sloth
ambassadors (including the famous Buttercup!), a tour of the new nursery
facilities (baby sloths!), and an excellent chance to see many of the
wild sloths, birds and other wildlife that frequent the area. Aviarios
also offers a small boutique hotel, and gift shop, with all proceeds
going to keep their primary educational and rescue operations going.
